Things We Support

Nexus is a supporter of many community-spirited functions. These are just a few of the things that we do as a company...

Several years ago Nexus celebrated Earth Day by discontinuing the use of plastic utensils and paper products in our kitchen area. Not only have we eliminated the volume of trash that goes into landfills, yet we have also saved money. Employees brought dishes, cups, and silverware from home. Everyone feels as if we have made a contribution to becoming more “green”.

Last year we decided to make a “Living Wall” as our Earth Day project. Most of our employees participated in the planting of the vertically hung wall, which is watered from the top. The plants include herbs, lettuce, and tomatoes. Each evening people can pick fresh items to take home for their dinner.

The placement of the Living Wall takes advantage of the Denver sunlight and breezes. These small steps make us more conscious of our environment and the role we can play in making it better.

We have fielded “Team Libby” to walk in the American Cancer Society’s event to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. About twenty of our employees participate in the walk downtown Denver. Many other employees contributed money that is matched by Nexus.

The company sponsors individual employees who choose to participate in marathons or walks for cancer (We have several in The Cancer Walk, one in Bolder-Boulder and one in the Avon Walk).

We made it!

We are supporters of the Mile High United Way on many levels. Our employee contributions are matched by the company. Many of our employees are volunteers with individual organizations that are United Way participants. Nexus has been cited for our generous contribution to employee ratio.

One United Way organization that we have adopted and support in many ways is Urban Peak. It is an organization to help young people overcome homelessness by providing safety, respect, and essential services. Each Christmas we fill a barrel with gifts, t-shirts, toiletries, socks, etc. All of our employees bring in items to put in the barrel. Several employees also participate with their families in serving food at their kitchen. We also collected items for school bags.

We are supporters of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Book and Author’s Dinner benefiting the Craig Hospital and the Hahn Alumni Scholarship Fund (benefiting Craig Alumni). Craig Hospital, celebrating 100 years of rebuilding lives, is exclusively dedicated to the specialty rehabilitation and research for patents with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. A dozen or so of our people attend the dinner each year.

Nexus acknowledges the value of education. The company will pay 100% of tuition for any of our employees to work toward their degrees. Many of our people have taken advantage of the program. We also reimburse our employees who obtain certifications within their fields.

Nexus also acknowledges the value of healthy employees. If any of our employees feel that they are beyond their healthy weight, they can sign up for a weight reduction program and be reimbursed.

Along that same line, if any of our employees who smoke wish to stop, we will reimburse them for any certified smoking cessation class.

Nexus is one of the sponsors of the Revolutionary Top 100 Garden Center Awards. It honors independent retail garden center owners for creating and implementing innovative and profitable business management practices into their operations. The awards done by Today's Garden Center Magazine spotlight garden centers that stand out for their commitment to leadership and serve as positive role models that others will follow and benchmark their own operations as a measure of success.

Twelve years ago, Nexus and GPN magazine began a program to annually award an outstanding intern in our industry. In order for the greenhouse industry to be successful, we need top notch growers who are well trained in the business. The GPN/Nexus internship Award is just one of the ways we work to further the future of the industry. This year GPN highlighted the past winners. Each of them recognizes the benefit of their internship and the award they received. We are proud of the important roles they now play in our industry.

In addition to all these, there are countless ways that our employees on a personal and individual level provide support to others through their churches and local neighborhoods.
